Audience Feedback

Michelle and I then revisited our storyline, after taking pictures for our storyboard. We realised that we could develop a better storyline to fit a theory on race. Using the theory and ethnicity, after reading ‘Abstract race and race theory’ by Howard Winant we found that during the 19th century, different sociological perspectives have developed shifted and changed. We related this to our view on black youths- in the 21stcentury; black youths are viewed as disruptive, aggressive, intimating and commonly materially and culturally deprived especially those who are from the working-class background. The Chicago sociologist department found that, neighbourhoods inflicts youth’s behaviour; they stated that criminal transmits their skills to young apprenticeships, although race is not really our main focus, we thought that we could refer to it during our film trailer.

[USE OF CAMERA FOR INTERVIEW TO INSERRT HERE]

We then decided to conduct a survey to gather people’s opinion on film trailers, Michelle and I, created a questionnaire using Microsoft Word our questions was based on public opinions on film trailers and how media represents working class and youths. We used quantitative and qualitative data; quantitative data was used for our statistical results, it is faster and more accurate for set results. We can conclude our findings faster and teenage crimes. My partner and I this is because it would be easier to convert into statistics to help us with the project.

This is my questionnaire that. We used a camcorder to interview members of our taget audience,  youths, working-class. The people asked, represents our mainstream audience which are students in urban areas and also middle-class area.
In the questionnaire we used closed questions, the respondent only required to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ however we did require that they also gave a reason, however some respondents did not have a reason for their answer.
Below is a copy of our questionnaire, we asked this because, we wanted to take into conisderation the general public opinion on teaser trailers and what they portray.

We found that people were not very keen with film trailers as they were with watching the film. Apart from the film being promoted through advertisement on television, rarely did individuals take time out to research into the film. From the audience I noted that a trailer is a combination of sound, narration, lighting, camera shots and title graphics, all this is too lure and ‘seduce’ the audience to watch the film.  The sample of people selected to watch the teaser trailers often reacted to the lighting, atmosphere that is created and fast cuts that takes place.

We then exported our recorded interview to a format that would enable us to upload unto our blog. This is how we did this:

After editing the blooper scenes i then exported the clip, by going on file then export then video.

Seeing that the file is quite big i had to

Teaser trailer acts as a stimulation, like an advert is constructed to urge the audience to watch it, teaser trailer ensures that the target audience is passive, meaning that they can not make a decision based on the media text, instead they are made to believe a certain situation. For my teaser trailer I intend to make the audience passive, this is because want then to watch the film produced, we want them to understand the message that we are trying to convey as stated before I aimed to make the audience aware of cultural theory, the belief of working-class being violent or dangerous.
The trailer composition of the trailer is aimed to drive the audience to watch the film. In my planning I thought of lighting, cutting and music effects used in every teaser trailer. It is a convention that cannot be challenged; teaser trailer has a essential structure that needs to be followed by all media institution.

My partner and i then produced a more detailed plan, displaying the intended shots that we wanted to take, as shown above, we included how we were going to construct our teaser trailer-the components of title graphic, sfx, types of shots etc... although we had this in hand we knew that it would change because we hadn't researched into what makes a successful teaser trailer. However we thought that we would still stick with our a plan until we have properly researched into what we were going to do.

More Research on Teaser Trailer, inc Plan

My partner and I researched and watched films concerning crime.  Using media theories such as Todorov- on the equilibrium and Propps theory on ‘folk’s tale’ we constructed a plan, which would be a guideline to how we are to construct our teaser trailer. The plan follows as this: -
Baring in mind that this is not our storyboard, but a plan to give us an idea on which direction we want our story to go to. We produced a flowchart that branched out to different story routes that the teaser trailer could take.

A plan on the route my storyline can go, what makes a succesful storyline?

After completing our guideline, we then decided; that we should think of our storyline, and insert it into the plan. The storyline went as this.
A middle class Caucasian girl is living ‘the life.’ A serotype of how people may perceive middle-class lifestyle to be, however the media text does not disclose the horrific life she is actually living, until we get to the scene where he dad is hurling abuse at her.  The girl is seen cowering away in fear and in self-protection Princess in distress according to Propps theory on folk’s tales.
The story then progresses to the girl meeting a boy (her love interest) and if not hero, she seems genuinely happy to escape the torment of her home, and into the arms of her ‘saviour’.  But the audience realises that she had fallen into the wrong hands. The girl’s life begins to take a turn for the worse, having taken drugs, stealing, beating up people etc…
The consequence of her actions is when she stabbed a boy during a confrontation and this lead the police to come to her house.
My partner and me are still developing the story as it might change as we progress on in our project.

I still watched and took notes of different teaser trailers. I decided to watch teaser trailers that represent stereotypical ‘blonde’ woman.
I watched ‘The Hills’ because it known to stereotype white’ blonde’ women; who are more concerned with their outer appearance and personal life than any other issues. The Hills tend to represent the middle-class and aspires. It’s presumably meant to be a reality-TV show but the filming and play tends to be too ‘doll-like’ to be real. The Hills is evidence of hyper-reality; hyper-reality is theory constructed by Jean Baudrillard’s who said that the media constructed a “mythological” model, which had no connection to the origin. Homes, relationships, lifestyle, fashion and culture have been created to form a model of a fantasy thatviewer’s aspirer to live.

Using my source youtube, I watched the trailer for The Hills- Season 6. The trailer clip used special effects, which made the main characters look taller than New York buildings. They were dressed very glamorously, and had the stereotypical look of blonde hair blue eyes, which is the ideal look of ‘western beauty.’ The girls wore pink-, which usually connotes with femininity, Barbie, doll-like and fake. Their target audience was clearly for young women, as their main focus was on beauty and fashion.
The beginning, is a landscape of the city where the drama is representing, the city is the landscape of one of the most prestigious areas in America; presumably Hollywood.

I then progressed to researching on film covers for one of my ancillary projects; I came across ‘Jade screen’, which had a distinctive front cover for it films magazine. It drew my attention because it was carefully architected, and eye-catching because of its complexity. It was an image of a man with two different shots merged into one, creating an odd facial expression. The media text sent a psychotic message, portraying a split personality; similar to Dr. Jekyll, a   fictional character, known for his two-sided personality disorder. The creativity was unique and use of lighting really highlighted the talent behind the image.

A small research conducted, analyzing the components of a film magazine, just to give a brief idea of how i wanted my project to go, thinking and linking any theories and concept and use of colors together.

Below, is an audio discussion taken between my partner and I, we discussed about our storyline and the theories and concepts behind it, click on the play button to listen of click on this link

I researched also on film posters to help me with my ancillary tasks, looking at the layout and thinking of what themes i can convey that link all three of my products together.

Research for Teaser Trailer

I watched and analysed recent teaser trailers, to prepare myself and gather an idea of what is required of me when constructing a trailer. I created a set of questions and answered them when I finished watching the clips.
1.      How are you using media technologies in the planning and research?
2.      Does it have the same element and composer as a teaser trailer?
3.      Does it suit the genre that they stated?
4.      Was the camera angle effective, in terms of creating a mood, making known the protagonist and probably the antagonist of the film?
5.      Were the sound effect, ambience and anchorage effective, did it create an atmosphere to suit the genre?
6.      Did I understand the plot, messages that the text was attempting to display?
I found my clips through a film search engineer called www.youtube.com this website offered my various trailers that I could watch. I used Microsoft words to input my researched data into the document.

A layout of the website used to watch trailers.                                                 The name displayed on the screen, is a British-produced teaser trailer, themed around crime. I gathered from the trailer that the film was aimed at teenagers, I knew this because of the dialogue- a lot of slang’s were used, the representation were mainly teenagers (secondary school & sixth form). Many of the language was based around knife crime, sex, pregnancy, status, bullying.
The most obvious, was the choice of music (soundtrack) and beats, it was hip-hop like, British rapping as opposed to the typical American choice of hip-hop. The British songs and use of location helped distinguish that this was a British film. From the trailer, I noted the different shades of light, different tones of lightness and darkness created a very bleak and deviant atmosphere. The film is also based around sub-culture: and deals with race and gender, effectively.                                                                      The trailer consisted of straight cuts; almost jump cuts- from one main scene to another. However at the same time it told the story and made the audience aware of the main events, but it didn’t give out too much. Instead it teased it target audience by releasing text that they want to hear, such as, “sex” “drugs”, scenes of drug-use and violence.

I analysed the trailer for the British film ‘bullet boy’. From the trailer I gathered that the genre was crime. The title itself relates to the context of the teaser trailer, e.g. Bullet.  The composition of a teaser trailer was fast, quick cuts to keep the interest of the reader intact. Bullet boy trailer had scene cuts, ambience and non-digetic sound that worked well together and created an eerie atmosphere. Although there was no narrator the anchorage was a spoken soundtrack, which was layered with the actual dialogue from the film. There was no urban hip-hop music, only the sound effects of a raid in the beginning of the trailer. As the audience we, via the trailer, note that the film focused on the aftermath of going to prison for a crime not primarily based on what caused the character to go prison. This explains the pitiful soundtrack, which represents sorrow, regret, pain and loss.  The location and speech showed that it is a British film, because we are familiar with places such as London Bridge- which is featured in the trailer. The producer of the film is showed in the beginning. The narration is not spoken but written instead, with an urban-type font, font size .12. As we progress to the end, the trailer includes the actors and actresses name and the company who produced the film. And the film cover is placed at the end, which is unusual, because film covers are usually placed at the beginning and the end of a teaser trailer.

The teaser trailer for shank starts off with the productions logo. The trailer is upbeat and fast-paced. The use of hip hop music tells the audience that it is based on urban crimes. With pop-pus explaining the trailer. uniquly, the trailer is futuristic based. It is set in 2015 and displays the dystopia of society. And how the producer and director see the country if gangs took over. There is a strong element of fighting and gun crime depicted in the trailer. the teaser trailer is fast-paced and the lighting is dusty, yellow with hint of grey- this shows destruction and dysfunction in society. There are a lot of ruined bulidings which the audience can relate to as a society where the law have been abloished and whats left is fighting against eachother. The focus of a young boy tells the audience that he is the protagonist in the film and also sends a message that, the younger generation are affected by the way society is, presently. However th film is quite universal because we follow the life of gangs rather than individuals.

Findings concluded: In my researched I found that film trailers often focus on the protagonist of the film, they often capture the main storyline in fast shots, not revealing too much and not concealing to much, this fascinted me on how they get to this yet still engage the audience until the end. Trailers work as a advertising componment for a film, it promotes the film at the same time, it enforces the hypodermic model theory, the idea that media injects consumers with messages and meanings.
